According to Markham Police Department Deputy Chief Samuel Harris, “The BMW, in an attempt to avoid the crash, ended up striking, rear-ending a second vehicle and they both went over the median in the secondary crash.”
A BMW driven by a nurse and a Hyundai SUV driven by an off-duty Cook County Corrections officer were involved in that secondary collision. At the scene, he was treated and released. The nurse is seriously ill but stable at the hospital.
According to the police, a passenger in the Dodge was partially engulfed in flames. He was saved by officers and taken to a critical care facility.
Harris stated, “He’s in bad shape right now.”
Mendoza’s cousin said that he and his friend were returning from the mall.
