A pregnant woman and her boyfriend were allegedly involved in a violent relationship. Prosecutors claim it ended when she fatally stabbed him.

According to prosecutors, Keshia Golden is accused of killing her child’s father during an argument in her Austin, Illinois apartment. According to her court-appointed attorney, she is being held in jail on a $2 million bond, and her next court appearance is scheduled for less than two weeks before her baby is due.

Golden is accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend, Calvin Sidney, during a heated argument. During a bail hearing, prosecutors stated that the Oct. 22 incident was not the first time an argument between the two had turned violent.

Prosecutors claim that between June and September, police were called to Golden’s home five times for reports of domestic abuse. Sidney choked, punched, slapped, or pushed her four times, according to police.

Golden obtained an order of protection against Sidney, alleging that he punched her in the face, according to court records and police reports. According to prosecutors, Sidney did not press charges after Golden stabbed him in the neck in July, causing him to go to the hospital.

“It was just toxic with those two,” Tarsha Ellis, Golden’s mother, told the Chicago Sun-Times. “But they were in love.” They wouldn’t have a case if he could stand up right now because he would never want charges brought against her.”

Golden, Sidney, and other relatives went to her apartment in the 5100 block of West Augusta after the baby shower. The couple got into an argument about who could use the microwave to heat leftovers around 3 a.m. Prosecutors claim Golden pushed Sidney down on the counter and knocked a plate out of her hands.

According to prosecutors, after Sidney’s uncle separated the two, Golden grabbed a knife, pushed past the uncle, and stabbed Sidney in the leg in a bedroom. Sidney died at a local hospital after suffering a femoral artery wound.

“She had no intention of killing anyone,” Ellis told the Chicago Sun-Times. “She’s in tears about it. She had no idea stabbing someone in the leg could kill them. She just wanted him to leave because he was misbehaving and she was afraid he would hurt the baby. And he refused to leave.”

Golden returned to the apartment hours after the stabbing, unaware that Sidney’s injuries were fatal, and was arrested by police officers. According to prosecutors, Golden admitted to stabbing her boyfriend.

Golden’s attorney, Julie Koehler, stated that Golden was hospitalized for four days as a result of Sidney’s injuries. She was granted a $2 million bond, which means she may have to give birth in jail, according to Koehler.

“It is cruel to the mother and the baby to not only force Keshia to give birth in jail, but then to take her child away immediately after birth,” Koehler said. “This callous decision violates Illinois law. All of the evidence points to Keshia acting in self-defense. The only person she’s ever acted violently against was the man who was beating her.”
