Friday, President Joe Biden will go to the Chicago area as part of last-minute efforts by Democrats to keep from losing seats in Congress and governorships across the country.
Biden will go to Chicago in the evening to take part in a political reception. Details about the president’s appearance have not been made public. In the Democratic stronghold, there are signs that some House members from Chicago suburbs may have tougher reelection battles than expected.
On Saturday morning, he will talk about Social Security and Medicare in Joliet. From there, he will go to Westchester County, just north of New York City, to campaign in a state where the race between Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul and Republican Lee Zeldin is close.
The Congressional Leadership Fund, a super political action committee (super PAC) linked to the GOP House leadership, announced this week that it will spend $1.8 million on ads against Democratic Rep. Sean Casten, who represents an Illinois district that Biden won by about 11 percentage points in 2020. Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, who is the leader of the House’s minority party, will campaign in the district with GOP candidate Keith Pekau on Friday.
After President Biden’s visit, Vice President Kamala Harris will go to Illinois on Sunday for a rally with the Asian American Pacific Islander Victory Fund to get people to the polls.
