After a security guard was shot inside the River Oaks Mall in south suburban Calumet City on Wednesday, police are looking for more than one suspect.
Calumet City Police Chief Kevin Kolosh said in a press conference Wednesday afternoon that officers responded to a report of shots fired at the mall around 12:15 p.m.
Responding officers discovered one male victim with multiple gunshot wounds and immediately began performing life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, according to Kolosh.
According to police, the victim was a security guard for a jewelry store in the mall. He was taken to a local trauma center, according to police, but there was no word on his condition.
According to police, a second male victim suffered a minor hand injury from broken glass and was treated at the scene.
According to police, the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle and are not currently in custody. The suspects were not identified by police.
According to police, the motive for the shooting is still under investigation. It’s unclear whether anything was stolen from the jewelry store.
“It’s unknown if it was targeted, but it appears as though it was isolated,” Kolosh said.
The mall was placed under lockdown, and shoppers were escorted out by police. The mall remains closed. According to police, they are currently interviewing witnesses and gathering surveillance video from inside the mall.
The investigation is being handled by the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force and Calumet City police.
