Elgin fire officials report that eight vehicles collided in slick conditions, resulting in one serious injury.

Thursday night in Elgin, eight vehicles collided due to slick roads, resulting in one serious injury, according to fire department officials.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., four cars collided near the intersection of Route 20 and McLean Boulevard. While Elgin fire crews were on the scene, however, four additional vehicles crashed.

Thirteen people were involved in total.

One individual was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive, according to fire officials.

According to the fire department, extremely slippery conditions on a nearby bridge were to blame.

Thursday night, a rain-snow mix fell across the Chicago region as temperatures hovered around freezing.

Tracy Butler, a meteorologist with ABC7 Chicago, said that more black ice is possible on Friday morning.
